Sony VAIO FS-Series: Setting A Higher Standard for Notebooks
Today saw the launch of the VAIO FS-Series, a new range of notebooks from Sony specifically designed to meet the needs of demanding but value-conscious consumers.
The distinctive styling of the FS-Series also conceals a practical dimension. The aesthetic appeal of its slimline profile is backed up by robust yet lightweight magnesium alloy construction. The combination of thin-format design and the choice of materials also means a carrying weight of only 2.8kg,
The low weight is even more impressive considering that every model in the range benefits from a large, 15.4-inch Widescreen display. The high resolution Wide XGA panel is perfect for watching DVDs and gives users the freedom to work with several applications at a time. Better yet, second generation Sony X-black LCD enhancement with double lamp technology yields a visibly brighter picture with more vibrant colours and heightened contrast.
Models configured with NVidia’s GeForce 6200 Go graphics offer significant advantages when it comes to demanding activities like gaming and video playback. NVidia’s TurboCache technology takes full advantage of the PCI Express® architecture to deliver performance not previously seen outside the premium sector.
The multiformat Double Layer DVD±RW drive standard on all models gives users a huge increase in capacity: effectively double that of a conventional DVD. This makes it possible to record or watch up to four hours of DVD-quality video on a single disk – without stopping to turn it over.
For maximum performance, battery life and compatibility the FS-Series is based on the latest Intel® Centrino® mobile technology. This includes the brand new Intel 915 motherboard chipset with full PCI Express support, and integrated wireless networking operating at the new high speed 802.11g standard.
"We know that even at the entry level, buyers now expect a lot of a notebook," says Colin Woodward, Senior Product Manager for VAIO notebooks. "With the FS-Series, we set out to exceed those expectations. That’s why the range is so strong on key features like the display, graphics and DVD burner - and the design and construction values are of the highest order."
The story doesn’t end there. Every FS-Series notebook is pre-loaded with value-added software including the VAIO Zone media interface, the Adobe Companion Pack for VAIO, and Microsoft Works.
New X-black: visibly superior
Conventional LCD screens are usually coated at the front with a light-diffusing layer intended to reduce reflection from the surface. A potential drawback to this approach can arise if light from the LCD itself is also scattered and diffused as it passes through the anti-reflection coating. This scattering effect causes black areas of the image to appear washed out, and lighter in tone than they should. It has a similar effect on colours, which lose their depth and vibrancy. The latest version of Sony’s exclusive X-black LCD panel used for the FS-Series is powerfully lit by two specially designed lamps rather than the usual one. The screen surface is finished with a reflection-reduction layer that has no diffusing effect on the light passing through it from the screen, and therefore no negative impact on image quality. This means these displays are consistently very bright, with a wide range of contrast. Colours appear vivid and lifelike, and blacks more truly black. The enhanced brightness of the image also helps reduce the effects of reflections from the screen surface typically caused by overhead lighting.
NVidia TurboCache: making good better
Nvidia® TurboCache™ architecture delivers premium graphics performance at entry-level prices by exploiting the potential of the new PCI Express® system bus. TurboCache uses PCI Express to provide a fast pipeline from the GPU to main system memory. The GPU can now render frames directly to system memory. This means that less dedicated video memory is required, yet the overall performance is actually superior to many conventional dedicated VRAM designs. The NVidia GeForce™ 6200 Go GPU selected for use in the FS-Series is itself extremely sophisticated. Particularly important is its support for the latest Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 Pixel Shader Model 3.0, which is being used to bring ultra-realistic detail to the next generation of DirectX 9.0 games.
